This National Historic Register archaeological site is open to the public.
Located near Mile Marker 4, one block east of Highway 35 at 12 Sage Drive in Mimbres, New Mexico.
Tour two 1880's era territorial adobe homes, the Benjamin Gooch Ranch House and the Dr. Granville Wood Ranch House. Visit room displays in the Mimbres Museum and the horse drawn surrey display. Enjoy the many bird species drawn by the native seed garden, in-season hummingbirds, and a butterfly memorial garden. The gift shop offers a unique variety of merchandise. Picnic, among the mature apricot trees and under the covered porch. Stroll down to the year round flowing, life giving Mimbres River.
The 1/4 mile interpretive trail of the Mattock's Site is wheelchair accessible and shaded.
The Dr. Granville Wood Doctor's office is open during business hours. It contains Dr. Wood's examination room full of antiques and curiosities. The Mimbres Archeological Research and Education Center (MAREC) and a field school laboratory/workroom are available by appointment only Marilyn (575) 536-9337 and Marianne (772)-529-2627.
The suggested entrance donation is $3 / person. Dress for the weather to hike 2 trails, the Mattocks Ruin interpretive trail & the trail to the Mimbres River. You are responsible to pick up after your pets.

Join Archaeology Southwest, Western New Mexico University, and the University
of Arizona this summer for the 2025 season of our Preservation Archaeology
Field School in beautiful Silver City, New Mexico, June 10–July 21.
Our Preservation Archaeology curriculum integrates research, education,
preservation, and engagement with Indigenous and local communities.
Collections-based research, museum curation, experimental archaeology, and
archaeological survey work is complemented by public outreach activities and
field trips to archaeological and cultural sites that immerse students in the history
and cultures of the U.S. Southwest.
Students will be active participants in our ongoing research project on
corporate groups, extended-family households who cooperated for activities
like growing crops and maintaining irrigation systems in the Mimbres area
from AD 1000–1130.
Undergraduate and graduate students will earn 7 credit hours while studying
collections at the Western New Mexico University Museum and conducting
archaeological survey work nearby. Students from small colleges and historically
underrepresented groups are particularly encouraged to apply.
